Words that People Overuse Entirely Too Much

I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’m getting older or what, but I’ve started to become more cognizant of what people say and interested in becoming attuned to what people really mean behind their words. I know we can all at some point get caught up in trends, slang, and popular culture, but I think I’m growing a bit weary of hearing people overuse words and diffuse their actual meaning. These are the three that have been sticking out to me the most:

Love

noun: an intense feeling of deep affection; a great interest and pleasure in something.

No surprise here. Surely people have been using and misusing “love” since the inception of its concept. But now you can “love” or “heart” posts on Instagram and all the big social media players. Love the new coat, the new hair, that headline she just wrote. We love the new Netflix series that came out. Guys playfully say, “I luv you, girl” to get past third base (and the women do it too). My neighbors love the new roofing we got installed and the flowers we planted in the front yard. Do you really have a deep affection or great interest and pleasure for the charcoal black wood shingles and the Walmart flowers in my half-manicured yard? Of course, we all have used or do use the word “love” in a lackluster way, more times than we can probably count. But I sometimes wonder — how…
